NBD Lakland Skyline 5501

It's a lot of bass for under $2k!
Graphite reinforced maple neck
Swamp ash body with sexy woodgrain (I wanted black but it sold before I got there. Now the grain has grown on me)
Hipshot lightweight tuners
Bartolini pickups and active preamp
Standard bent metal style bridge
Plek'd neck and frets

The neck is chunkier than many would care for but I sure dig it - the plek'd neck/frets etc allow a super low action. I'd heard people like to immediately upgrade the preamp but so far Im loving it. The controls dont need much adjustment for big changes to happen and the mid control frequency seems to be set a bit under the middle so not quite low mids but not Musicman style bright mids if that makes sense?

The weight is what you'd expect for a five string but less than a Musicman Stingray 5.

My only gripe is that the way this thing has been designed, there is quite a distance between the strings and the body of the bass. I never thought that would be a problem but after my first gig with it and not being able to get the speed and dexterity Im used to with my Sandberg, it seems that I have gotten quite used to a more "shallow" set up. Evidently I tend to have the tip of my thumb on the bodyt for stability. Thats just me though. If I spend some time on my technique I'd be a better player and not have an issue. I looked at getting a scratch plate made for it - that would bring it up a bit but it's labour intensive so I'd be looking at around $250! Yeah Nah Fk That. I taped a bit of cardboard between the bridge pickup and the neck and it made a huge difference so I could get a ramp but still nah... Turns out I can just place my had over the neck pickup he he

Great tone, brilliant slap bass - love it even though it's a bit un-attractive he he

Sorry, not sure if I'm misunderstanding your comment, but why would a scratch plate cost $250? Give David Searle a call from DJS guitars.

Ha I did!
Its not the cost of the materials - its the man hours. It's not like there's a template for this model etc
